Welcome to the capital of Mongolia!
The year of 2007 marks the 368th anniversary of the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar. History records that UB was established in 1639 C.E. Then it was called Urguu. Under the rule of Munchu Qing Dynasty, the city was moved to the present location in the year of 1778 with a new name of Ikh Khuree under Bogd Khaan who ruled both the state and the church. It was renamed to Niislel Khuree when Mongolia fought its' autonomy from Manchus in 1911. Following 1917 Russian Revolution, in 1921 Mongolia became second communist state in the world and declared its' independence, the city once again was renamed to Ulaanbaatar in 1924 which means Red Hero.
Ulan Bator still reflects the seventy years of Russian influence where the majority of government and cultural buildings,
hotels
and five to twelve story apartment districts were built since 1940s. But the city is dramatically changed since 1990, it grew from half a million to more than a million people. It is rapidly growing as political, cultural and economic capital of Mongolia. According to 2006 statistics, capital city alone produced Mongoia's 40 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, which can be broken down as 53,4 percent of industrial production, 87,1 percent of construction, 56,3 percent of trade, 80 percent of energy and 98 percent of transport and communication. The city virtually does not sleep during the warm season of the year but the life goes on even it is average minus 20C during the days and drops below 30C during the nights from December through February. The harsh climate and landlocked position does not hinder the spirit and the growth of the capital city.
