I will be moving to UB 14-7-2012 and will live in Nisora Tower next to the GK hotel,if I find life in Mongolia agreeable, I will sell my place in the UK and will stay there. It has been ten years since I was last in UB, when most expats seemed to be Russians. If you or any othyer English speaking person in UB would like to hook up for a drink or two feel free to EM durtydave2000@yahoo.com

Two Years And Counting
by: Anonymous

Wow! I have been here two years now how time flies!
I am enjoying life here, the economy has tanked and one gets over 3000 tugriks to the British pound that is 50% more than two years ago, although it must be hard for the locals a waitress gets only 400k a month for a fifty hour week how she can manage on that as it must be difficult.
Every week finding new places, one is a Sri-Lankan so far the best food yet, it is one hundred yards south of the Metro Mall called Ceylonia.
With foreign investment drying up,many friends I made have gone elsewhere, the latest hot spot for expats seems to be Cambodia, a lot of teachers have left Mongolia for there.

Life in UB
by: David P

The weather here has got a lot colder, it is more October then September compared to the UK, it is also expected that this winter may be the worst on record, and I have met folk who are making plans to go to sunnier climes just in case,Snowbirds from Canada spring to mind! I also find it quicker to walk as most roads are log jammed, it seems all one needs for a driving license here is to have a pulse as the driving skills here by most drivers is zero.I tried out the Chinese restaurant at the Chinggis Khan hotel, be warned it is the most expensive place I have found here to date, with most dishes priced at 40000T then to rub salt on your wounds 10% VAT is added. Still I have discovered a few Mongolian places where two can eat for 11000T washed down with green tea, very nice slices of meat with gravy, along with veggies.Sad news to report as Shaun has left Hennesseys bar, a favourite place for expats to meet up, Thursday quiz nights will never be the same.

If you haven't already found it, make sure you check out Cafe Amsterdam. They make the most amazing breakfast and the service is great. www.amsterdam.mn

David, did you check out the supermarket on the first floor of the State Department store? I don't know how the prices compare to SKY though.

a little later
by: David

Nearly three weeks here, met some new friends, go to Hennesys bar on a Thursday night, folk will slot you into a quiz team, ask for Shaun the manager.Depends what time of year it is, but pay a visit to the garden bar alongside the Flower Hotel, there the most mouthwatering kebabs are served along with salad and black bread (very nice) for only T7000, 0.5 of a litre of Tiger lager is priced at T4000. When I changed up some Pounds at the State Supermarket I got T2073 to the Pound, so you can see that your money will go far here, and for the smokers out there a carton of Red Marlboro is T16000 that is the price of twenty back in London! All is not sweetness and light, traffic jams daily with drivers blaring their horns in frustration, the dust that coats the inside of your home if you open a window, and the most persistent flies I have ever seen in my travels. There is one large supermarket SKY that is near me, but the prices are on the high side, but it was amusing to see Camel and Horse meat alongside other meats that we are used to, There is an indoor market at the rear of the Circus, there prices are very low, but be prepared to be jostled as the walkways are narrow, if anyone likes this post I will keep it going, you might find it funny as I am going to shrug off a few years by having some plastic surgery!
