Mongolia Gobi Desert was voted into top six travel destinations in the world by National Geographic, makes things even better. Now just guess: what is the oldest mongolian musical instrument ?

I am just throwing these facts based on major search engines results like Google, Yahoo etc, in other words, what do people searched about Mongolia the most. Now, I am directing you to Mongolia's best web directory Tsahim.net

Now back to the facts about Mongolia. The land is more than twice the size of big state of Texas, it is even bigger than Alaska. It is 1,6 million square kilometers which is four times of Japan and almost the size of whole eastern Europe.

This makes Mongolia sixth largest country in Asia and nineteenth in the world. Pretty impressive, uh. Ok, enough about the size. But the population is only 2.9 million which makes Mongolia one of the least dense areas in Asia. Here is an overview of Mongolia weather.

If you consider 40% of the population lives just in the capital city of Ulan Bator or Ulaanbaatar that leaves lots of room for you to travel in the outback. Of cause, Gobi is even less dense and it is considered a traffic jam when you see another two vehicles passing on both of your sides on 20 lane road, ha-ha.

Almost another 40% of population are scattered all over Mongolia with their thirty plus millions heads of sheep, goats, cattle, horses and camels.

We have 21 provinces, called aimag. Each aimag has a centtal city or town and about 15-22 sub-provinces called soum. So you will know which aimag and which soum you are in. See the maps of Mongolia. religion facts on Mongolia: more than 50% will say they adhere to Buddhism which is very much mixed with Shamanism, close to 10% will claim to be Christians of all forms and less than 6% follow Islam, the remainders will say that they are atheists.

There is an excellent book on Mongolian Christianity by Hugh Kemp Steppe by Step that I have read. It indeed opened my eyes and I recommend it to everyone who is interested in Mongolian Christianity.
Click, facts on Mongolia Government.

Do you know of population facts on Mongolia? 70% of Mongolia is under the age of 35! Gender ratio close to 1:1. Ethnicity: 84% Khalkha Mongols, 6% Kazakhs and 10% other ethnic groups.

Stephen Bodio wrote a book about Kazakhs which was selected by Frances Mayes for The Best American Travel Writing 2002. Eagle Dreams was born out of his childhood dreams to travel to East Asia on wings of eagles'. He has fascinating stories about eagles and people who have become one with these animals.

The official language is Khalkha Mongol. English and Russian are widely understood but less spoken. If you speak one of the two you will survive. It is fun if you learn few phrases in Mongol before you come. Everybody will love you and try to understand you no matter how you say it.
