Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ The MONTSAME National News Agency names ten highlights events that took place in Mongolia in 2008.

1. The Government of Mongolia initiated and carried out the 3rd campaign for reclaiming virgin lands nationwide. This campaign was much fruitful. About 205.8 thou tons of wheat were harvested nationwide. This was more by 91.2 thou tons against the previous year. According to the results of autumn harvest, Mongolia provided with a possibility of supplying 50 percent of its domestic consumption of crops and 49.6 percent of potatoes and vegetables. This session proves that Mongolia can fully prepare its domestic needs of crops, potatoes and vegs.

2. Sudden heavy snow storms, occurred in May 2008, took away 54 lives and killed dozens thousands of livestock resulting in a large amount of damage to the country. 3. Parliamentary elections ran in June 2008. A total of 365 candidates from 12 political parties and one coalition competed in 76 electoral districts. Totally, MNT 7.2 billion was spent on organizing the elections. The Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) won 45 seats in the elections. Despite the election results, the MPRP and the Democratic Party established a coalition government.

4. The riots and public disturbances took place in July 1 in Ulaanbaatar. In the course of the event, hundreds of people were injured and a huge amount of assets and properties, belonging to the state, public and private organizations and individuals, was burnt and destroyed. During this tragic event, five people were killed. A state of emergency was declared in Ulaanbaatar for the first time in the history of the country at a decree by the President of Mongolia.

5. The 14th of August. A team of Mongolian athletes successfully participated in the Beijing Olympic Games winning three gold and two silver medals which were awaited and hoped for by Mongolians for 44 years. This was unforgettable event for the Mongolian nation.

6. Mongolian general education schools shifted into a 12-year education system on September 1. Nationwide, about 42,000 children aged six started to go to school. This action is considered to be the biggest change ever made in education sector of Mongolia to meet with international standard and requirements.

7. September 2008. A 40-meter high Chinggis Khaan statue is built on Tsonjin Boldog hill, 53-km (33-miles) from Ulaanbaatar. The site of the monument of Chingiss Khaan riding horse has special significance in the history of Mongolia. This creative work became the biggest monument ever in the world.

8. December, 2008. Parliament approved a resolution to exploit Oyu Tolgoi and Tavan Tolgoi deposits and entitled the Government to conclude investment agreements with investors in these deposits. According to the parliament resolution, the government was entitled to establish investment agreements with domestic and foreign investors under the condition of at least 51 percent of ownership of Mongolian government in Tavan Tolgoi deposit and 34 percent in Oyu Tolgoi deposit. It marked widely the 30th anniversary of the Mongolian-Russian joint venture Erdenet Mining Corporation, which plays vital role in development of Mongolia.

9.. The bank of Mongolia sent its authorized representative to Anod Bank, which was on the edge of bankruptcy, to normalize daily operation. As a result, a success was achieved. The crisis of Anod, one of the largest banks in Mongolia, was an event giving a shock to bank and financial sector of Mongolia.

10. According to the preliminary conclusion of the livestock census, the number of Mongolian livestock reached 42.2 million. This is the largest number ever in the history of Mongolia.
