Mongolian Horse Racing

Mongolian Horse Racing, like anywhere in the world, is very lucrative sport in modern Mongolia. No doubt it is an age old sport game in Mongolian steppes. However, there is no indication in ancient Mongolian history that the horses were raced for entertainment and gambling.

Today, it is developed to be one of the national sports. There are two main nationwide races during Lunar New Year )Tsagaan Sar) and National Independence Holidays (Naadam). Although every one can participate in all levels of competitions, it became an elite sport.

Mongolian elites have their race horses and their prices are in millions and millions of tougrouks, consequently, the prizes are high too. Mongolian horses are quite small in statue but proved to be very strong and enduring long distance races.

They start from two year old ponies to adult 6-7 year old stallions. The jockeys are just boys and girls of age 5-10. The trainers do the hard job all year around but the real owners are upper class people who often gamble.
