Medical Help for Pregnant Women in Mongolia's Extreme Winter Provided by UN
The extremely harsh and unfavorable winter conditions across Mongolia are not letting expectant mothers reach health facilities, which is now requiring the United Nations to being all the needed medical help closer to them.
The UN Population Fund, in association with the UN Children's Fund and the World Health Organization, has been offering support to life-saving mobile medical teams and local district hospitals by replenishing them with medicines, medical equipment and supplies. All these are expected to bring some relief to the hardest-hit western section of the Central Asian Country.
"The needs of pregnant women and newborns cannot wait until normal times. That is why mobile teams are needed to reach them where they are", said Argentina Matavel, UNFPA Representative in Mongolia.
Only last week, a medical team in the western Khovd province had rescued a herder who had unexpectedly gone into labor in her tent, and was unable to reach the nearest hospital, which was about 30 kilometers away, because of the heavy snow.
