Tourism in Mongolia, compared to other countries, it is still in early development stage. It actually started to grow rapidly when Mongolia opened to the rest of world in 1990. The service has improved very much within such short period of time.

Mongolia is known to the world by the name of "Genghis Khan", the modern Mongolian language spells it: Chingghis Khaan. The main attractions of Mongolian tourism are closely related to this person. It is literally been "resurrected" after centuries of burial in Lamaistic Buddhism and seventy years under communist dictatorship.

The "re-birth" was so gigantic in scope, to the point of competing with Mongolia's main religious idol of Buddha who only suffered the latter part of seventy years. The idols of Genghis Khan are bigger in size and in numbers, it is even been erected in front of the Parliament House.

genghis khan

Genghis Khan has become a National Idol. There is huge one, at least 100 feet tall, is erecting just outside of Ulaanbaatar to the east. If you are going to Terelj national park you stop by.

You will see his images everywhere: from small gift crafts to banknotes and to the most respected place of Mongolian households. Also, do not be surprised to see his different images when you get to travel to Mongolia.
